In the Lowes magazine, they used high quality stainable wood boards. I opted for the more economical canvases:
Step 1. Paint your canvas that you got at JoAnne's for 50% off of $15.99 (or at least pretend like you're painting it because you forgot to get a picture of actually painting it. Don't forget your fake candid picture smile!)
2. Step 2- Align your rubber doormat that you got at Target for $19.99 on top of the canvas. The Doormat was slightly bigger than the canvas, so we taped off the outside border from the back.
Step 3. Apply your really cool $3.99 make-a-gun out of your spray paint can thingy (don't worry dad, it's not a real gun)
Step 4. Apply quick thin coats of spray paint
Step Five: Lift your doormat stencil off the canvas to reveal a BEAUTIFUL piece of art. Swoon.
Although I was originally planning on doing 4 of these, like I pictured here:
I decided on 3 because you're supposed to do things in odd numbers in design. It's a rule, I didn't make it up - but I think I might want to do 4 after all. What do you think?
A huge thanks to Kimba at A Soft Place to Land for hosting DIY day. Be sure to check out the party for other great ideas!

Very classy. I love it! I will have to do this someday.
I love it!!! I have a huge area above my stairs to cover, and this would be just the thing! Thanks! Teri @ acraftyclan.blogspot.com
I really like this a lot! I might have to try this for my big empty wall! Thanks for sharing. :-)
I saw this and I'm so glad someone else did it. What a neat trick!
How fun!
Blessings to you,
lana
Those look totally wonderful!! Great job!
That is a totally cool idea. I love it!!!
I love it! I'm going to have to copy you! If you think you want four - what the heck, go for it! I do need to know how you got the Lowes Creative Ideas magazine? I went to our Lowes and couldn't find it and I went online and nothing there either. If your project is any indication of what's in that magazine, I need to get me one!
That looks great! Excellent job!
Love it!
Whhhat!? That's seriously the coolest thing EVER.
And, because you did it I'm pretending you thought of it not Lowes, I got your back girl. ;)
It does look lovely though! So does your living room, want to come clean mine? Mind you you'll have two little devils making a mess right behind you though. :)
Thanks for sharing! I'm going to go obsess over doing this sometime this week!

I LOVE it! Might just be copying it...
Very, very cool!
Oohhh, I LOVE IT!! And I really like the 3. But it would look good with 4 too.. decide in a few days if you want another.
Dang, why can't my door mat be better??? Maybe I can get it to work though... hmmm
This is amazing! So classy and clean!
Those look great... I saw the idea at Lowes, too... but your tutorial makes it look even easier. maybe I'll give it a shot! Thanks!
How neat! It looks gorgeous over your couch.
LOVE it & totally wanna do it!!
WOW! WOW! im so glad you shared this wonderful art idea, i just may have to copy you. I have been racking my brain trying to come up with something different and this is PERFECT! Looks absolutely wonderful above your sofa.

I love that! I must have missed that magazine article. When was that. I may have to steal that...TOooo bad I couldn't just borrow you matt for the stencil, that would be way cheaper. HAHA
Holy, Cow! This is such a GREAT idea! I'm totally doing it. Thanks for the idea.
I am SO doing this! I just bought 3 canvases at Michael's to do something to hang over my living room couch. I wasn't feeling covering them with fabric and would have needed a fairly large stencil to paint and stencil them. This. This will work! Love it and thank you for sharing how you did it.
Just last night I was thinking of doing something like that for a bookshelf. I'm trying it out today, so wish me luck! Great job.
Such a great idea. Looks easy with YOU doing it. Loved the finished product. Three of them look fine over the sofa, but I like the photo with four better. I think if I were you (since it's so cheap to make), I'd go ahead and make a 4th one and put it up. If it doesn't work - you can always send the 4th one to me!
I haven't seen this done before. Great idea!
Found you on the DIY Show Off. Wow - those are amazing!! I may just have to re-create this in my house! PS - I'd stick with the 3 - looks perfect to me! Pop on over to my blog one day if you get a chance.
I LOVE this!!! I'm adding this to my list of projects to try!

I copied this idea and I'm posting it on Poppies at Play (poppiesatplay.blogspot.com). I'll, of course, be giving you all the credit for the idea and linking back to here for reference to your awesome tutorial. Is that okay?
OMG I love this! I saw this in the mag and have saved it to share with readers. I'm going to post this on my FB page!!
This is AWESOME!!! I found your blog several days ago, and love it!!! Thanks for sharing these wonderful ideas, especially with pix! In my home I have a HUGE niche 15 ft up in the wall, for who knows why the builder put it there, would it be easy to make a wood frame, buy a canvas drop cloth, and do kinda the same thing, instead make it huge? I cant wait!!! im 39 weeks preggo, soo im drooling over all these awesome ideas! Thanks again!
LOVE IT. i have to do this somewhere in my house!
and how much do I love that we have the same tables. :)
I love this!! Kudos on your viral post!
SO COOL! Who knew something that looks so great would be so easy!

I really like those! At first I thought maybe they were those decorative grates for the heat registers or something similar for the design. I like the 3 pattern. Maybe you can use the 4th in another room or spot. Very cute! I have never seen the gun for the spray can either...I must get one of those! Thanks for taking the time to share.
I'm doing this next weekend. What a great idea! It looks like expensive art work.
I featured your awesome artwork in my post today!

Love it! I may have to try this, I also think that the 3 is perfect! I will credit you if I do end up doing this. I love DIY art, then if you change your mind your not wasting a fortune $.
You got me with that one! Brilliant!
This is an amazing and clever project! I have two questions though before I do it. What size canvas did you use? And second I have been shopping everywhere to find canvases for cheap but the only canvases I can find are about $30-40 each!! Any tips will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
