Spray Painting Blinds

I was excited to see that the girls over at Shanty2Chic were hosting a Rust-Oleum linky party, because as you know, spray paint is one of my best friends!  Seriously, is there anything that can't be made better with a few coats of spray paint?

The most dramatic change I've ever made with spray paint is when I decided to spray paint our blinds in our living room.  We were on a SUPER tight budget when remodeling the house, so spending close to $100 for new blinds in that room was OUT.  They were already sturdy and in good condition anyway - just ugly.

I was very skeptical that this would work, and googled the heck out of spray painting blinds and came up with nothing.

We hung the blinds outside on the swing set

And Jarrod commenced the spraying with Rustoleum's Espresso in a Satin Finish

Here's the Before:

and the MUCH improved with a can of spray paint after:

These were faux wood blinds, probably made out of some sorty of vinyl or plastic.  But they had a fake wood grain in them which you can still see, so these really do look like espresso stained wood blinds!

Perfect!

Check out what others are doing with their spray paint at this party:

  12. Hello ~I've just strolled in for my first visit...I've enjoyed taking a peek at your past posts. You've got so many wonderful ideas. Your blog is so beautifully inviting.
We share similar taste for so many of the same creative design elements.

As fall came to a close I looked forward to winter (that's fast approaching), bringing a festive inspiration for a few DIY decorations and gifts. With a little baking in between.
Don't you love the aroma that fills the air during this season?
My cat also appreciates the evergreens and an occasional ping pong toss of my (newly created and not yet dried) ornaments...

I've bookmarked you in my favs.
I look forward to coming by your charming blog again.
Come by for a visit. Your company would be nice.

  29. Good job, Stef! Since I work at night and sleep during the day, I want my room to be dimmed, but the white window blinds are still too bright even when they’re closed. Thanks for this brilliant idea. I will definitely try this on my room’s vinyl blinds. =)

  30. What about the STRINGS? Did you spray paint those as well? I have faux wooden slat blinds and I want to paint them white. Do I cover the strings with painters tape or just paint over the strings?
    Thanks for the advice,

    1. So I've been working on this for a few days now. Strings seem to do fine after sprayed. I started using a spray gun after it took a whole can and I didn't even get done with 1 of my smaller blinds. Huge tip.....spray the top side completely so they are parallel to the ground and let it dry. Then hang it upside down so the now painted side is resting on the strings to paint the bottom. This will help eliminate the line you get from the strings.

  45. I decided that if I do spray the cords, it will be after the slats have been removed. I can't see how there could not be marks from the paint as this blogger painted hers. And I'm a bit bothered that she hasn't replied to any of the pleas for response on this subject.

    ReplyDelete
  46. what about the cords and the strings?!

    ReplyDelete
  47. JUST TELL US ABOUT THE DAMN STRINGS!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have not tried this myself but being a big spray painter of almost everything, there is a high likelihood the paint will not stay on the strings as it is only a coating. When the cord rolls repeatedly over the metal when pulling blinds up and down it is bound to roll or wear off. Dying the cord would be a pain, but would give the best end result, and then only if the cord has plenty of cotton in it to take the dye.

  53. I just saw this post on spray painting blinds. Wow, how neat this is, but I have a question....does the paint affect the strings? My blinds in my bedroom are very large because I have an oversize window, so I need to know if the paint will stay on the strings or will it come off when the blinds are raised up or down?

  55. I know this post is several years old, but as folks are still posting, I thought I would too. Firstly, to say nice work on the blinds and secondly to ask/seek out ideas from those who may have done something similar for suggestions on how best to hang the blinds outside (if I don't have a swing-set frame to temporarily hi-jack!)?? - Of course I could do it on the floor on a drop cloth, one side at a time, but I have 3 blinds I will need to do, and figure that is going to take some time. Also, can anyone comment as to how much spray paint they needed for their blind and the size of teir blind, so I can use that as a reference for how much I might need and so I can weigh up the cost of the paint and time vs. buying new blinds in the color I want?! Thanks all!

  56. I used one can to do a small basement window blind. I had to lay mine down on an old piece of wood because I didn't have an option for hanging it. This took a while because I had to keep repositioning it to ensure full coverage. As for the strings, I was a little alarmed at first because they were stiff and if I pulled up the blind the string seemed to buckle all the way up the blind which looked awful. I do not usually pull any of my blinds up unless I'm cleaning the window so it isn't an issue. All I ever do is open and close the blinds which is fine and they look wonderful. I will definitely be spraying the other two that I have but somehow will figure out how to hang them.

I asked him what he thought about spray painting blinds and he said absolutely not because the paint will not stick to the strings. I suppose it would be fine if you never plan on lifting or opening the blinds and simply want a covering.

  67. Two well known stylistic theme styles are conventional vintage and mid-century vintage. Both of these stylistic layout styles are motivated by different times that are in any event 30 years or more seasoned. Discovering inside stylistic theme to coordinate these styles can be simple with second hand shops and carport deals, yet coordinating your particular style to the ideal faux wood blindscan be troublesome.
