Big impact - Small budget. Faux Wainscoting

After finishing my mirror project, the dining wall just looked so plain.  It's a long wall with a lot of blank space, and I wanted it filled.

Keeping the Tuba player's budget in mind I decided to do a faux wainscoting treatment that I've been wanting to do forever.

So I went to home depot and loaded up with some boards and got to work.  This whole project cost less than $40 and took one evening to install.

I wanted the wainscoting to be somewhat on the tall side so I got some 4 foot boards (1/4 inch thick) and had them all cut at the same time to 3 feet.

We spaced them about 20 inches apart:

Then put one all the way across and topped it off with a chair rail:

Then it was PRIME TIME

And after two coats of paint, this is the final product:

Before:

After:

Just a few hours and around $35, and a huge transformation.

Thanks to between naps on the porch for letting play in your Metamorphosis Monday
feel free to take a look around at the rest of my projects, and stay tuned for more!

  10. ps. my house is so crooked that if I tried it it would never look straight. Our floors in our regular dining area slant (big time!) and when you hang anything it may look straight with the ceiling molding , but not with the floor molding--but I love what you have done.

  20. You know, this post actually makes me sad that our current dining room already has wainscoting! I'd love it if it were 3 feet tall like this, but I can't see pulling out the "real thing" that someone paid a lot of money for, to do this, even though yours looks better! And that makes me sad. :(

:) I just need to find another room in our house to do it!!

  22. This is AWESOME. My sis and I want to do this in our house. How did you adhear this to the wall? Was it finishing nails or liquid nails? I'm scared of liquid nails b/c they are so permanent...Can you use finishing nails?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Love it! Your wall color is gorgeous too. I'm planning on doing this in my living room. I wish my walls weren't so textured though because I won't be able to "cheat" by using paint in between the boards.

  27. I LOVE this! I think this would look awesome in my dining room. There's already a chair rail there. . . do you think it would work just to install the horizontal board below the existing chair rail and then add the vertical boards below that? Of course, it wouldn't be as brilliantly tall as yours, which is part of what I like. . . but still. I may have to see if I can do this for myself! Thank you for the inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was just thinking of doing something similar to this in our dining room. I will have to work around chair railing all ready in place so it won't be as tall...which I would really like...but I gotta work with what we already have up. Did you nail them in place or glue um and if you glued um what glue did you use??

I found 1/4 in. x 3 in. x3 ft tall boards at Michael's craft store.

Please post how you attached yours to the wall.

I am using the wainscoting idea for my hall bathroom. I cannot wait for the finished product.

  46. I just want to thank, thank, THANK you for this wonderful idea! I recently used your technique to transform the master bedroom of our new house. It already had chair rail and a faux finish paint job that I couldn't wait to be rid of. I love my new room! No one can believe that I did it myself :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Great work - you've inspired me to do the same in my dining room. Only problem is I just went to Home Depot and bought all the material and they do not sell the 1/4" x 4" strips in long lengths - only the 4ft lengths I am using for the vertical pieces. So I bought 2" (next widest) pieces in 12ft lengths for the top perimeter (under the chair rail). But I'm not sure if it will look as nice and uniform as yours. Did you find long lengths or short ones? What do you think I should do? I don't want too many seams but 2" may be too small.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful work with the world!!

  48. I love this look and am tickeled pink I found your blog!!

But I've gotta ask- are your walls sprayed with that orange peel texture too? I'm also from Dallas and have never seen this until I moved here. I absolutely hate it!

I would *die* to be able to do this in my house but fear the orange peel texture will make it look wonky. :(

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love the look of this and would like to try it out myself in my living room. I just have one question. If you spaced the wood boards 20" apart did you have to use wall anchors to fasten them to the walls since they could not be in studs which are usually 16" apart? Your response would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Amy -

I did not have to because since I only used the 1/4" board the boards were super super light. I mean feather light. No need to anchor them. If you use larger pieces that you feel are too heavy for the drywall, I think 16" would look fine. You could bring the height down a little, so the rectangles look more square than tall. Or, I've seen tall skinny rectangles that look great too.

    Hope that helps!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Looks BEAUTIFUL! I so want do do this in my dining room. How did you attach the boards to the wall? Using liquid nails or penny nails??? Thanks so much... I've searched THOUSANDS of sites on how to do this and Yours is the best and looks great! My ceilings are low (75") what height do suggest I go to with the TOP of the chair rail?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I found your site searching for info to finalize my plans for the faux wainscoting I wanted to do... Seeing yours completely changed my plans! Looks great and much simpler than what I was going to do... A suggestion if you have acces to a table saw... rather than purchasing the boards as you did... I purchased sheets of 1/4" x 2' x 4' plywood and cut them into the 4", "boards." This reduced the cost significantly. For a project your size it would have cost ya about $6 (not including primer & paint).

    Thanks!

  53. I am just dying to try this out--it looks FABULOUS!!! I have some of the same questions as some others have asked.

I'm curious as to how you meshed the bottom of the vertical boards with the existing baseboard.

How did you adhere this to the wall? Was it finishing nails or liquid nails? I'm scared of liquid nails b/c they are so permanent...Can you use finishing nails?
If you used glue, what glue did you use??

Which section in Home Depot was your wood?

Thanks so much--you have great ideas!

  54. I was wanting to do this as well and looking at your site gave me the green light. With 2 children under the age of 2 it's taking me longer than 24 hours, but it will be done before Christmas.
I saw the post about how to adhere them, I am using finishing nails and so far it's fine.

Thanks for your great ideas. Keep them coming.

  59. Love it!! Thanks so much for the inspiration, will be doing this in my home (with hubby's approval) hopefully soon.

Wanted to give you some info if you wanted to do it even cheaper (I want to put it in my foyer, hallway, staircase, and upper hallway), you can get 1/4" 4x8 plywood for about $20 apiece, if you have a table saw you could easily cut them to the 3" or 4" size needed and it would save a bunch of money. :) Just wanted to offer if anyone is considering doing a larger area than just one wall.

Thanks again for the quick tutorial, your room looks gorgeous!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. how did the thickness of the boards line up with the baseboards? We're trying to do this but our baseboards do the little curve at the top and come almost flush with the wall, there is a ledge but it's just a few millimeters--did yours match up perfectly?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Looks great! Did you glue or nail the boards to the wall?

  71. I have to say, I was very happy to see your blog entry! My partner and I bought a 1910 Saltbox-style home in Pittsburgh, PA in 2010, and are about 80% finished with a complete renovation. I, too, had a brain spike one day and decided to do this very same thing in several of our rooms, most impressively on either side of our original exposed-brick fireplaces in the master bedroom and living room. In the guest bedroom we had a very large (12' 6") wall that was totally blank. I decided in there to make the wall a checkerboard wainscoting pattern - so I basically installed the boards all way to the ceiling in the same manner I did in the other rooms, only I added the horizontal 1x4's as well (inside each vertical board), and all of it is inside a 1x4 "frame" around the entire wall. Everything is painted bright white (like yours) with a warm color above the wainscoting and I absolutely cannot believe these are the same rooms. Man, what a difference! It's uncanny the rich, warm, traditional feel a few pine boards, a bit of white paint and a couple of hours of work will give a home. Hands down, this is, by far, the easiest, most inexpensive, and most instantly-gratifying project I've ever taken on. I wish we had more blank walls! We will be selling this house when it's finished and building a custom yurt (round home) in the country, and I will MOST-definitely be repeating this project there. Thanks for posting!
